YORK, SC-At noon Thursday, York County Office of Emergency Management (YCOEM) announced that mile marker signs are now placed along the Catawba River every half mile from the dam to River Park.

This project was led by Harris Vaughan, Eagle Scout candidate, who enjoys the Catawba River and had the idea to place these mile markers.

YCOEM in partnership with Carolina Dive and Rescue and other agencies partnered with Vaughn to provide signs, posts and to coordinate getting the markers into the 911 systems.

“Individuals on the river will now have reference points in case of an emergency,” said Chuck Haynes, Emergency Management Director.

“Emergency Management encourages users of the Catawba River to remember their lifejacket and which mile marker they are near.”

These signs will inform the public, guide the public and will assist in coordinating an emergency response system. Future plans are to extend the project to Lancaster County.
