South Pointe High School Athletic Director, Mike Drummond, has announced that he will retire from that position effective at the end of the current school year. Mr. Drummond has served in that capacity at South Pointes since August 2006. In that particular year, the school served grades nine through eleven and offered its first year of varsity level competition in contact sports – football, wrestling and soccer. It would not have a senior class until the following year.
During his tenure, South Pointe has won numerous region championships and produced many individual state champion athletes in various sports. The 2014 girl’s golf team finished the year as state champions and the varsity football team brought home the state title in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Many athletes have gone on to compete at the college level.
South Pointe principal, Al Leonard, credits Drummond for helping build the South Pointe Athletic Department from a start-up program to one that has been successful and competitive in numerous sports. “Few people realize the tremendous amount of time and energy it takes to effectively run a high school athletics program, especially one within a community such as Rock Hill where expectations are understandably high,” said Leonard. “Coach Drummond has done an outstanding job building a program that seeks to positively impact, support and guide our student-athletes to be successful in their particular sports as well as within the school and community.”
Prior to taking the position at South Pointe, Drummond served as the Associate Athletic Director at Winthrop University from 2003 -2006. He began his tenure at the university in 1986 and served in several capacities along the way that included Intramurals Director, Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and the Director of Athletic Operations for the Winthrop Coliseum.
Originally from Spartanburg, Drummond served as the city’s Assistant Recreation Center Director from 1982-1985 and as Wofford College’s Assistant Basketball Coach from 1982-1983. From 1985-1986 he worked with the South Carolina Department of Youth Services.
