Masks are decreasing the spread of the coronavirus in South Carolina, according to SC-DHEC. In their report SC-DHEC says new data shows that local mask ordinances are helping to slow the spread of COVID-19. “This new data shows us what we already knew, wearing face masks works,” said Dr. Linda Bell, S.C. State Epidemiologist.

When comparing the jurisdictions that have mask requirements in place to those that don’t, those that do have shown a 46.3% greater decrease in the total number of cases during the four weeks after the requirements were implemented.”

The jurisdictions with mask requirements in place have seen an overall decrease of 15.1 percent of total cases for the four weeks after the requirements were implemented compared to before the requirements were in place. During the same time frame, those jurisdictions without mask requirements have experienced an overall increase in total cases of 30.4 percent.

For the second time in a week South Carolina saw its lowest daily number in coronavirus cases since the middle of June with 712. 32 of the cases were in York County, 16 were in Lancaster County and 16 were in Chester County. The percent positive was 19.6%. 45 additional confirmed deaths were also announced. The death total is now 2,057.
