Winthrop University Friday afternoon passed a resolution to ask South Carolina’s state legislature to change the name of their ‘Tillman Hall’ back to ‘Main Building.’ The building is named after Ben Tillman, a former S.C. Governor and white supremacist.
Board of Trustees Chair Glenn McCall emphasized that the Board cannot give an official vote to change the name unless they are granted an exception from the Heritage Act by state legislature.
The Board met in Executive session for almost 2 hours discussing this issue among other items. The decision comes one week after Clemson University voted to make the same change to their Tillman Hall.
