Multiple police agencies responded to a shopping center in York County after an armed robbery Thursday morning at a business.
Officers said they responded to the shopping center on South Congress and California streets around 9:30 a.m. after a man robbed York Beauty Supply and then barricaded himself inside one of the stores.
Police said the situation started with an attempted robbery. The owner of the business was able to get out, locked the suspect inside and ran across the street to call 911.
WRHI’s news partners at Channel 9 saw broken glass around the front door of the business where it appears the suspect tried to shoot his way out or hit the door with the “butt” of the gun to get out and run.
Several departments and agencies responded to the scene including York Police, the York County Sheriff’s Office, SWAT, Rock Hill Police, the Bomb Squad and Tega Cay police.
South Congress Street between California Street and Galilean Road was closed as dozens of officers worked to get control of the situation.
Officers said the situation ended around 11 a.m. when officers got word he might be in a nearby apartment complex. Authorities were able to confront the suspect at the complex and arrest him.
The 17-year-old suspect was charged with armed robbery, along with several other charges. Officials said because of his age, they will not be releasing his name, but they said he did confess to the crimes.
No injuries were reported.
