Even though college basketball season is a few months away, hundreds of new Winthrop University students Saturday turned out at the Coliseum for a Rock the Hill pep rally.

Winthrop athletic director Ken Halpin says the event was about more than just trying to get the new students to become Eagle fans.

“We really do want to inspire our students to come out to support our events.  But more than that, we want our students to know how much we believe in them and how much we see us as student-athletes the same as the entire student population.  We’re all students, and everyone does something above and beyond their roles as students.”

Winthrop President Dan Mahony welcomes the new students during this afternoon’s convocation at 3:00 in the Byrnes Auditorium.

That will be followed with the traditional Blue Line procession to a community picnic at 4:00 on the front lawn.

Classes begin at 5:00 p.m.
